What I now know about Science - By Tyrah

Come Together Kids: Exploding Sandwich Bag experiment

One of our experiments we did was called “The Exploding Sandwich”. What I learned about this experiment is that when you put baking powder and white vinegar together, it collides together and explodes. They explode because the hydrogen ions in the vinegar react with the sodium and bicarbonate ions in the baking powder. And therefore, because these are highly reactive chemicals, they cause an explosion.

Another thing I learnt about this experiment was if you have a scar on your toe and the mixture of baking powder and white vinegar splats on it, it stings pretty bad. It stings pretty bad on scars because the vinegar has strong chemicals inside it which affects scars. Therefore I learnt that baking powder and vinegar should not be used or applied on scars or wounds.

Sometimes when the mixture accidentally comes out of the bag, it doesn’t cause the experiment to work. It doesn’t work when it comes out of the bag because you need to have the right amount of baking powder and white vinegar. Otherwise, the experiment won’t work. So when you do this kind of experiment, you have to seal and crease the sandwich bag properly and thoroughly to make sure nothing spills or comes out.
